When you’re working with Cisco routers and switches on IOS 15, it’s important to keep your licenses safe. One of the easiest ways is to export the license to a file and then download the file with TFTP, FTP, or however you normally grab files from your device.

I have a router that I want to factory reset and backup the license on just to make sure I have it. Use the following commands:

R1# license save flash0:backuplicense.lic
R1# copy flash0:backuplicense.lic tftp

This will give you a license file for the router. It might be a good idea to name the license file for which router it’s for. If you ever do something that wipes the license, copy the file back to the router and then install the license from the file.
