Initial Switch Config Lab

Scenario: You have been tasked by your manager to configure a new switch in a local office. The switch has been plugged in but has not been configured. Your manager is in the Remote Office on the other side of town and needs to be able to access the switch over telnet. You’re at the Local Office and connected your laptop to the switch console port. Configure the switch according to the following information your manager gave you. You can do these tasks in any order that makes sense to you, but all the items must be completed.

Solution

Connect to the Network Admin Laptop and start the Console app. All default settings should be accepted to connect to the switch.

Enter privileged exec mode and global configuration mode.

Switch> enable
Switch# configure terminal

Set the switch hostname to OfficeSW1

Switch(config)# hostname OfficeSW1
OfficeSW1(config)#

Configure the MOTD banner to Authorised Access Only!

OfficeSW1(config)#banner motd #
Enter TEXT message. End with the character '#'.

Authorised Access Only!#

OfficeSW1(config)#

Set the privileged mode password to “cisco” and ensure it’s encrypted.

OfficeSW1(config)# enable secret cisco

Set global password encryption on the switch

OfficeSW1(config)# service password-encryption

Configure the console port to enable login, set the console password to “access”, set the timeout to 5 minutes, and enable synchronous logging.

OfficeSW1(config)# line con 0
OfficeSW1(config-line)# login
OfficeSW1(config-line)# password access
OfficeSW1(config-line)# exec-timeout 5
OfficeSW1(config-line)# logging synchronous

Configure the telnet port to enable login, set the telnet password to “remoteaccess”, set the timeout to 10 minutes, and enable synchronous logging.

OfficeSW1(config)# line vty 0 15
OfficeSW1(config-line)# login
OfficeSW1(config-line)# password remoteaccess
OfficeSW1(config-line)# exec-timeout 10
OfficeSW1(config-line)# logging synchronous

Set the switch’s IP to 192.168.1.2/24 and set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1

OfficeSW1(config)# int vlan 1
OfficeSW1(config-if)# ip address 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0
OfficeSW1(config-if)# no shutdown
OfficeSW1(config)# ip default-gateway 192.168.1.1

Copy the running configuration to the startup configuration.

OfficeSW1# copy running-configuration startup-configuration

Telnet from the RemotePC to 192.168.1.2 and login using remoteaccess and then try to get to enable mode using cisco.
